7 Things

Monday, January 15, 2018

Today I thought I would dedicate this post to my best friend and sister, Lindsey. In honor of the post, I thought I would title it "7 Things" because of one of our favorite songs by Miley Cyrus, called "7 Things". For 7 reasons, I thought I would write about her because I wanted her to know how thankful I am for her. I don't know what I would have done had she not been by my side all these years.

1) She ALWAYS has my back. This is not a joke. She always has my back. There have been a number of instances where others have said things about me in front of her and she has always defended me. Even when I was at my worst, she was there for me when I felt like I had no one else. I will forever be indebted to her.

2) She is talented in ways I wish I could be. My sister is incredibly talented when it comes to music, sports, and school. I don't want to say I'm "jealous" because that's a strong word, but I envy her abilities in those areas. I have to work twice as hard to get to her level of abilities and that has always been tough for me. But I am so proud of how far she has come.

3) She is one of my role models. Whether I want to hear it or not, she always gives me advice. She humbles me every time I start to lose sight of what's right or wrong. It's somewhat irritating, but I know she only does it because she loves me so much.

4) She has a great relationship with the Lord. I am envious of her relationship with God, because she is a better person because of Him. I have always flip flopped (of my own volition, of course), but Lindsey has always seems to stay connected to God. Obviously, she's not a perfect human because no one is, but I have always admired her because of her relationship with God.

5) She goes out of her way for me. When I first moved out a couple years ago, she gave me money when I didn't have any (or rather, when I spent all mine). She brought me food, household items, movies, etc. and never asked for anything in return. This weekend she showed me even more so that she has a servant's heart. She cleaned the downstairs area for me while I was sleeping, she helped me get ready for work when I was running late, helped gather all the trash, fold the laundry, etc. She is truly a Proverbs 31 woman in that area. I don't deserve that kind of treatment and I am so thankful for her and all that she does for me.

6) She is always encouraging me to keep playing instruments and writing.
Lindsey knows very well that I quit singing, playing music, and writing because I didn't want to compare myself to her. I find that she is far more talented than me but she asks me to do it anyway because I want to, not out of competition against her.

7) She always says I love you. Even when I don't feel like I deserve it, she always says I love you like it's the last time we'll see each other. She always says "I love you" after I screw up. She forgives like it never happened. Even if we stay mad at each other for a while, she always says she loves me. I have never once questioned her love for me and that's about as Christ-like as a sinful human can be.

What I Would Tell My Sixteen Year Old Self Now

Saturday, January 13, 2018

I have learned a lot in my 21 years of life. I've learned even more since I was 16. Since it's been almost 6 years, I thought I would do a new post like this. I'd like to think that I've gotten wiser with age and improved in some much needed areas.

To My Sixteen Year Old Self,

1. Don't stress over what you want to do with your life. You're only sixteen. You have a whole life ahead of you. God is the author of your life story and He is the only one who can bring it to completion.

"And I am sure of this, that he who began a good work in you will bring it to completion at the day of Jesus Christ." Philippians 1:6

2. Don't focus on boys, school, the future, or money. Focus on bettering yourself and who you are in Christ. You are nothing without Him, and you can't do anything until you love God totally and completely. Everything will work out in the end when you listen to what God is asking of you.

"I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing." John 15:5

3. Friends come and go. Don't promise to be "best friends forever" with someone so young because most likely, after high school, you won't be as close. Not always for bad reasons, just different seasons of life for each person. There is a time for everything in life. New seasons, new friends, new growth.

"There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under the heavens: a time to be born and a time to die, a time to plant and a time to uproot, a time to kill and a time to heal, a time to tear down and a time to build, a time to weep and a time to laugh, a time to mourn and a time to dance, a time to scatter stones and a time to gather them, a time to embrace and a time to refrain from embracing, a time to search and a time to give up, a time to keep and a time to throw away, a time to tear and a time to mend, a time to be silent and a time to speak, a time to love and a time to hate, a time for war and a time for peace." Ecclesiastes 3:1-8

4. Makeup, hair, and nails are material things. God looks at the heart. He doesn't look at outer beauty. Be a good steward of your money and don't spend it on things you really can't afford. Beauty doesn't always have to be about the way you look. Beauty can come from your beautiful soul, your heart, your Christianity, your worth in Christ.

"Your beauty should not come from outward adornment, such as elaborate hairstyles and the wearing of gold jewelry or fine clothes. Rather, it should be that of your inner self, the unfading beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is of great worth in God's sight. For this is the way the holy women of the past who put their hope in God used to adorn themselves." 1 Peter 3:1-5

5. Love God. Love your family. Don't take anyone in your life close to you for granted. Your family loves you more than anyone else on the earth, and God cares and loves about you more than even your family! Your sin does not stop God from loving you. He loves you so much that He was willing to die a painful death for you. To wash your sins away as far as the east is from the west.

Life Lessons Series

Friday, January 5, 2018

It's 3am on January 5th, 2018 and I'm thinking about years past. One of my goals for the year was to write more, whether aimlessly or with direction. This area has been sorely lacking in my life and I want that to stop. I haven't done near as much as I did when I was in high school and I had a full load of classes then. My life has ceased to be exciting or adventurous, but I'm okay with that.

I have been thinking about how far I've come from 2014. I have become more of an adult and I've gone through a lot of life lessons. So, so many hard life lessons. This post is mostly about where I worked in the last few years and what it has taught me.

One question I always seem to get is, "Why do you work third shift?" Well, I'll answer that for you after I write a very detailed, long, backstory, so fasten your seat belts. Three years ago I moved out of my parents house and decided I wanted to live on my own and have a job that paid more than I was receiving at the time. I was advised not to do it, but I did anyway. Cue first eye roll. I moved to a town 25 miles away and worked at 2 restaurants and my aunt's flower shop one day a week, which worked out well for a while. . . .minus the busyness and the rude customers. Then I was getting cut early, my paychecks were getting smaller, and my spending was getting larger. So I pursued another restaurant job. Cue second eye roll. I then quit the first two jobs to pursue the 3rd restaurant and a local coffee shop job. Cue third eye roll. I know, this is getting a little eye-rollish. My behavior was less than stellar back then. What was I thinking? SERIOUSLY. I didn't have consistent "dough" coming in, as promised. I was working double shifts, getting cut early from shifts, and dealing with crappy, demanding, rude customers all day long. Unfortunately, I was let go from those two jobs within a week of each other. "Great", I thought. "Now I have NO money." So I put in applications at departments stores. I heard from one and about a week later, I was hired. But the only thing was, it was third shift. Not something I'd ever worked before. I was no stranger to middle of the night writing or watching TV or reading books, so I figured this would be all right. So, now I will get to answering the burning question, "Why do you work third shift?"

I work third shift because I was tired of working several day jobs that were getting me nowhere. The jobs required me to walk, talk, and stand for 8 hours saying hi to people. It may not seem like it, but I was getting burned out by it. I am an introvert so I gain energy by being alone, not around groups of people. I was surrounded by people all day long and I was exhausted. So when I was given the opportunity to work thirds, I thought I'd give it a shot. A year and a half and three locations later, I'm still working there. I don't work around people at all, I'm usually by myself. And while the loneliness can get to me in the middle of the night, I wouldn't trade my job for anything else right now. I feel as sane as I've ever been in my life. Never have I questioned why I was doing this. I know why I did thirds: so I would be around less people, have more time to think to myself and still be able to work without as many interruptions. It does require me to sleep during the day and miss out on some opportunities and family time, but my sanity is at normal levels.

My first life lesson: If you like your job, don't quit it to do something that you're not sure you can truly handle. Serving at a restaurant, for example. I tried it twice and got fired twice. Not my cup of tea and I'll never try it again. Not worth it. I commend the people who CAN do it, though. Seriously, hats off to you.

My second life lesson: If a family member is willing to give you a job, don't put them on the back burner. Family is ALWAYS in your corner. Other people are not, usually. Although working for family is not something I really like doing, I'm forever thankful that I was given several opportunities to work for them. It taught me things.

My third life lesson: Keeping a job for a long period of time will show other employers that you are reliable, stable, and able to hold down a job. I don't plan to be with this company FOREVER, but it's where I'll stay until I get a better sense of what I want to do with my life. If all I can do is work at this job for the rest of my life, then I'm fine with that. There's no use in quitting and searching for something. Contentment is something I'm working on this year, so I want to be content with where I am in every part of my life.

Thank you for reading this incredibly long story! I plan to do more posts about life lessons because they are SO important. I have learned so much since I went flying off the deep end. I'm in the shallow end and just floating, not so much drowning. I thank God for that every single day.
